The Verification Handbook is a collection of must-read chapters, edited by Craig Silverman and designed for journalists and humanitarians. The chapters provide step-by-step guidelines for handling user-generated content. It was published in 2014 but has many pieces of advice that stand the test of time.
The Handbook prescribes best practice advice on how to verify and use information provided by the crowd, as well as actionable advice to facilitate disaster preparedness in newsrooms.
Chapter 2: Verification Fundamentals: Rules to Live By was written by Steve Buttry and is an important reminder of the key things to remember when you’re working with eyewitness media.
Chapter 3: Verifying User-Generated Content by Claire Wardle is also highly useful, breaking down the key steps when verifying material sourced from the social web.
Malachy Browne’s chapter on verifying video, chapter five, is also full of great tips and advice.
