#FDLive 3: Free training for journalists, livestreamed from AJ+ on July 14

Speakers from Reportedly, Dig Deeper Media and Meedan will discuss putting community first in social newsgathering and verification

After the success of our first two live workshops from the Guardian and The New York Times, First Draft is pleased to announce the third in the series at AJ+ in San Francisco on Thursday 14th July.

Speakers from Reportedly, Dig Deeper Media and Meedan will discuss the tools and techniques involved in putting community first in social newsgathering and verification, broadcast live for anyone to watch online.

Reportedly’s deputy managing editor, Kim Bui, will show how the Reportedly team find trustworthy sources through social media and develop relationships with them online, to the point where they become reliable and valuable contacts.

Based on his experience with AP, ONA and Dig Deeper Media, Fergus Bell will look at the dangers faced by some sources on social media through their interaction with journalists and demonstrate ways to minimise risk.

Tom Trewinnard, who works on collaborative verification platform Checkdesk at Meedan, will discuss how certain visual cues and language can better communicate issues around hoaxes and verification, and how audiences can play a part in helping journalists get to the truth.

Alastair Reid, managing editor of First Draft, will also give a round up of free tools for journalists working in social newsgathering and digital verification.

The livestream will begin at 10am in San Francisco (1pm EDT, 6pm BST), viewable on the First Draft website, with session times as follows:

10.00-10.05 Welcome from Alastair Reid (First Draft)

10.05-10.10 Greeting from AJ+
