Privacy Policy for the CrossCheck App

This privacy policy describes the information we collect from you, and how we use it, when you use the CrossCheck app.

By using the CrossCheck app, and by submitting your information to us, you acknowledge that we will process your personal information as described in this policy. Your use of the CrossCheck app and your submission of information to us, and any dispute over privacy, are subject to this policy.

The information that we collect is stored in servers in the European Union and solely controlled by Eyewitness Media Hub, which is registered in England and Wales at 2nd Floor, Stanford Gate, South Road, Brighton, BN1 6SB, United Kingdom.

What we collect, when and why

You directly provide us with most of the data we collect, and the information we collect from you depends on how you use the app. The following section explains what information we collect, when and where in the app it is collected, and why we collect it.

Registration

When you first use the CrossCheck app, you have the option to register for an account.

  • If you choose to register, you will be given the option of signing up with your email address and selecting a password, which we will collect.
  • Alternatively, you may register using a third party service to log in to our service, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google or Apple. The information we receive from these third parties will depend on their policies and your account settings with the third party service.

We ask for and collect this registration information so that users can see their previously submitted tips and receive alerts from the CrossCheck app.

Submission of these registration details (whether that involves a unique CrossCheck app email address and password, or the third party service log in) is optional. Users will still be able to use the CrossCheck app even if they do not register for an account.

If you register for an account with the CrossCheck app, you will encounter pop-up boxes inviting you to fill out further details, such as your first and last name, job title, language, country, preferred region, and the option to receive emails from First Draft. Submission of these details is optional. We ask for and collect this information so that we can personalize your CrossCheck app experience: for example, displaying content that would be most relevant to your preferred region and language, and sharing the tips you submit to local CrossCheck members in your country. Additionally, we use this information to communicate with you and for our own internal research about the characteristics and preferences of app users.

If you choose not to register for an account, you will not see the pop-up boxes. We do not automatically collect information (such as IP address, operating system, device ID, or unique sender ID) from those who choose not to register — unless you submit a tip to us on the app, in which case we will automatically assign to you, and collect, a unique sender ID along with the tip, and your IP address.

Submission of tips

When you submit a tip to the CrossCheck app:

  • If you have not registered for a CrossCheck app account, a unique sender ID will be assigned to you, and this sender ID will be transmitted to us. We will also collect your IP address.
  • If you have registered for a CrossCheck app account, you will have the option to either:
    • Submit the tip under your account, in which case the account details you submitted during registration and your IP address will be transmitted to us, along with the tip.
    • Submit the tip anonymously, in which case we will treat the tip as if you were not registered. We will not attach the account details submitted during registration to the tip. We will collect only your IP address and a unique sender ID (assigned to unregistered users), along with the tip.
  • You will have the option of uploading supporting information about the tip. Depending on the type of supporting information you wish to include, the app may ask you for permission to access your camera, microphone, photo roll, other media files on your device, other apps (if you are looking to upload a piece of information stored in a different app), and your geolocation. If you choose to allow access, this information will aid the verification of the tip. You may withdraw permission at any time.
  • Once the tip is submitted, we will share with our CrossCheck members (a network of newsrooms, other information providers, and disinformation specialists) your tip, the information you have submitted in support of the tip, your language preference (if you have submitted this detail to us), and your country (if you have submitted this detail to us).

Connecting your CrossCheck app account with your CrossCheck platform account

The CrossCheck app gives users an option to connect their app account to their existing CrossCheck platform account.

If you select this option, we will collect your CrossCheck platform account log-in details (email address and password) to verify that you are a CrossCheck platform user and to synchronize tips between the app and the platform. You are not required to have a CrossCheck platform account, or to connect the platform and app accounts, in order to use the app.

How we use your information

We use your information for:

  • Administering and improving the CrossCheck app.
  • Internal operations purposes, such as troubleshooting and testing.
  • Communicating with you about your use of the CrossCheck app.
  • Understanding how our users access and use the CrossCheck app, in order to improve the user experience.
  • Responding to user preferences.
  • Marketing and promotional purposes.
  • Research and analytical purposes.

We do not “sell” any information we collect about you to third parties, however that term is defined by applicable laws.

How we keep your information secure

We take strict precautions to protect the information we collect from loss, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure and destruction. All information you provide to us is stored on secure servers in the European Union.

You should take measures to protect against unauthorized access to your CrossCheck app password and login details (if you choose to register for an account) by keeping your login details and your password private, and by selecting a strong password that others cannot easily guess. We are not responsible for any lost or compromised passwords or for any activity on your CrossCheck app account that has been conducted via the use of an unauthorized password.

How long we keep your information for

We will retain the information we collect for up to two years from the date of your last use of the CrossCheck app.

Our collection and use of your personal information is done in accordance with your consent. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, but still use the CrossCheck app, by choosing the “delete your account” option in the app. After deleting your account, you will be treated as an unregistered user.

Marketing and Promotional Emails

If you selected the option to receive emails from First Draft and would like to withdraw your consent, you can do so by clicking the “unsubscribe” link in the footer of our emails.
