Audience engagement fellow

First Draft is a global non-profit that supports journalists, academics and technologists working to address challenges relating to trust and truth in the digital age.

We host a global verification and collaborative investigation network through our CrossCheck International initiative, work in partnership with our expanding community to conduct innovative and experimental research projects, and continuously develop online and offline training designed to expand and embed best practices in newsrooms and journalism schools around the world.

With a firm focus on tackling information disorder, First Draft is building on its pioneering work around recent elections in the US, France, UK, Germany, Brazil and Nigeria.

The audience engagement fellow will work with the editorial and outreach teams in developing First Draft’s digital strategy, reaching journalists, academics, technologists, thought leaders and the wider public with First Draft’s groundbreaking work building resilience against disinformation and media manipulation. The successful candidate will work in First Draft’s London office, supported by and reporting to First Draft’s digital editor.

Key duties and responsibilities:

– Support the First Draft editorial team in devising and scheduling the organisation’s social media output and strategy across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, as well as the newsletters and website.
– Work with the editorial and outreach teams to identify untapped audiences sympathetic to First Draft’s work
– Evaluate First Draft’s social media and output strategy to inform future planning
– Use analytics tools to monitor the success of the organisation’s social media posts
– Test innovative and effective ways to promote First Draft’s training and editorial content online and offline
– Create reports identifying successful strategies and areas for improvement
– Support the organisation in authoring any relevant editorial or training material for publishing online where appropriate

Key skills and experience:

– Excellent standard of written English, with strong verbal communication skills.
– A confident and pro-active attitude.
– The successful candidate will have a keen interest in how social media affects society, and a desire to harness those same tools for good.
– They will live and breathe social media in all its different guises and have proven experience in identifying and reaching a breadth of audiences across different platforms. – – – Familiarity with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube is essential. Working knowledge of any other platforms is also preferable. The role is not just in making posts go viral, but in finding and interacting with audiences who will value the engagement beyond a passing interest.

Fluency in a second language would be a plus but it’s not mandatory.
